This song is written for Ursl.
The track started as an exercise with two students of mine to understand and create sample-based music from original vinyl. It taught me that samples provide a new musical palette and result in stunningly different novel creations in the hands of different artists. This is one of the three very different compositions that arose from that exercise. I tried for hours to recreate the sample of Levitate and could never quite create the atmosphere conveyed. And the Comus sample (one of my favorite bands from the 70's - who I was fortunate to see live in London) became so core to the underlying feel of the song it too could not easily be substituted. So here it is.
The lyric and the spirit come from the day I departed Iona in the morning rain in Sunday’s early morning light after Mark’s wedding when I had met you. It projects forward into the next five years as my old life dissembled in unexpected ways that were very hard for me to cope with. Love hurts. Love saves. Love breaks. Love unites. Love is hard but not brittle. Love creates. Love destroys. I talk of the passage of time, my yearning for physical love and the unliklihood of meeting you, the exclusivity of the love of a man and a woman. I consider the impossibility that there is anyone else but you. I am looped into the crazy unwinding of time in our age. I end with the plea for my soul mate to be with me until the end. The deep desperate cry of the heart never to be broken.
